Osiel Gonzalez

Hello. My name is Osiel Gonzalez. I’ve primarily worked as an artist and designer. But these days if you were to ask me, I’d tell you I’m primarily a toy maker and inventor. My background, academically speaking, is in film and then in architecture.

I’ve always been interested in tactility. Painting for me was merely an expression of the tactile, via color and material, on surface. Painting for a time was the best way for me to get this out.

Painting eventually led me to sculpture and then from sculpture to architecture. Throughout these various practices, I’ve held onto an ethos of scrappiness. I want to work with what’s immediately around me, and I don’t want material constraints to dictate what I can and can’t do. That is why you’ll see a lot of found material in my work. These materials were just what was around at the time, what allowed me to get my expression out.

Nowadays you can catch me working on my educational electronic toy company, Ozitoys.
