OUR STORY
From Vision to Community: How collaboARTive Began
In 2017, a simple yet powerful idea took root in Miami: what if emerging and mid-career artists had access to affordable studio spaces where they could create, connect, and thrive? This vision became collaboARTive, born from the recognition that Miami's vibrant arts community needed dedicated, accessible spaces for artistic growth.
Founded by artists who understood firsthand the challenges of finding affordable creative workspace in South Florida, collaboARTive started as a grassroots initiative to support fellow creators. By 2022, our commitment to the community had grown into something bigger – we officially became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, cementing our dedication to empowering artists throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
What began in a single location at 4726 SW 75th Avenue has evolved into a thriving ecosystem where over 400 artists from diverse backgrounds – including creators from Nigeria, Jamaica, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Israel, Cuba, Vietnam, and beyond – find not just studio space, but genuine community. Our journey from startup to established nonprofit reflects our core belief: when artists have the space and support they need, entire communities benefit.
Today, collaboARTive serves as proof that accessible arts infrastructure creates ripple effects of creativity, economic impact, and cultural enrichment throughout our local landscape. From our weekly Noche de Arte events to our professional development workshops, every program we offer stems from that original 2017 vision of artists supporting artists.
We acknowledge that collaboARTive's studios operate on the ancestral homelands of the Tequesta, Calusa, and presently, the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida. We pay our respects to the traditional custodians of this land, past and present, and honor their enduring relationship with these territories.
As an arts organization fostering creativity and community in Miami, we recognize our responsibility to acknowledge the historical and contemporary presence of Indigenous peoples and their profound cultural contributions to this region. We commit to supporting and amplifying Indigenous voices through our mission of creating accessible spaces for artistic expression and cultural exchange.
