Lauren Faith Dawson

ARTIST BIO

Lauren Faith Dawson is a fine artist who explores themes of biology, the life cycle, and motherhood via painting, sculpture, and multi-media work. Growing up in a family of strong women, Lauren’s great-aunt encouraged her to take art lessons and follow her creative pursuits from a very young age. While in college, Lauren remembers making her first memorable piece: a sculpture of my five mothers with small fabric figures dipped in wax. It was at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where she began exploring the use of objects to tell a story on canvas. After earning her B.F.A in Sculpture and Photography, she opened her own portrait photography business and ran a successful food blog. She has lived all over the country including Boston, Austin, and Philadelphia. and now resides in Miami, FL with her husband, son, and twin daughters. Lauren was an art teacher for many years and recently transitioned to full-time art making. Her work is included in many private collections around the US.

Artist Statement

I approach my paintings as objects instead of surfaces, incorporating materials such as wax, latex, fabric, and thread into my canvases. My work centers around themes of biology, cells, and lessons from generations of women before me. Looking closely, you’ll discover stories from my own childhood and experiences as a mother. These stories are inscribed on wax-soaked fabric as disappearing secrets, in a running stitch I learned from my great aunt or through the fabric-sculpted pasta pieces reminiscent of time spent in the kitchen with my grandmother. My art practice enables me to be reflective and playful. I create visceral and meditative pieces that preserve a moment in time and express the experience of being a contemporary woman and mother.
