Flor Mayoral
Her early photographs from the late 1970s and early 1980s explore private space through the aesthetics of the family photo album, capturing intimacy and domestic habits with an autobiographical gaze. In the 1990s, she developed a strong interest in nature and landscape photography, alongside a growing technical mastery of scientific digital photography applied to plants and natural or artificial elements. Influenced by modern authors such as Imogen Cunningham, this period marked the beginning of her exploration of portraiture.
Towards the late 1990s and early 2000s, urban space, architecture, and city life became central themes in her work. Influenced by Jeff Wall, she adopted a voyeuristic perspective to observe gestures and behaviors of individuals and groups, reflecting the tension between individuality and overcrowding in contemporary cities.
In the 21st century, Flor Mayoral immersed herself fully in contemporary portrait photography, making it the core of her artistic practice. Drawing on expressionist approaches akin to Thomas Struth, her extreme close-up portraits document the face with forensic intensity, deepening psychological perception. Her project Before (Now) After stands as her most personal and conceptually daring work, redefining portraiture within postmodern photography.
