Meet the Board: Erin Parish
From Detroit's Streets to Miami's Art Scene: The Journey of a Visionary
When all four of your parents are artists, creativity isn't just in your blood—it's your entire universe. For Erin Parish, growing up in inner-city Detroit surrounded by artistic influence set the stage for what would become a remarkable career spanning over three decades in the art world.
Parish's journey began at Bennington College in Vermont, where she earned her B.A. before heading straight to graduate school at Queens College in New York. By 1990, she had her M.F.A. in hand and was ready to dive headfirst into the art world. What followed was a career that would take her from art galleries to artist studios, and eventually to becoming a full-time artist herself by the early 2000s.
But Parish isn't content with just creating art—she's passionate about elevating the work of others. Now based in Miami Beach, she's made her mark as both an artist and curator, bringing a unique perspective to every exhibition she touches. Her current role as Curator for the Tenth Street Gallery in Sarasota showcases her commitment to presenting art that "exudes numen, uplifts emotions, or confronts one's shadow."
Previously, Parish served as Director of Exhibitions at the Laundromat Art Space in Miami, where she honed her curatorial vision of combining artists at all levels of their careers in single exhibitions—a democratic approach that reflects her belief in art's power to connect and inspire.
Parish's own artistic vision is nothing short of cosmic. Her paintings explore "visions of subatomic particles, microcosmic atoms and cells that make up the universe, the Higgs Boson Field." With 35+ years of experience creating realistic and compelling works, she's spent considerable time studying Latin American abstract artists, bringing that rich cultural perspective to her curatorial work.
Parish's journey from Detroit to Miami Beach, her commitment to supporting artists at every career stage, and her belief in art's transformative power make her an invaluable addition to collaboARTive's board. Her experience in both creating and curating art, combined with her understanding of the challenges artists face, aligns perfectly with our mission to provide affordable studio spaces and foster creativity in Miami-Dade County.
